Incubation period: 3-30 days. Patient looks very toxic. In Nepal, fever that persists for over four, five days has a good chance of being typhoid fever, especially if the patient has had no vaccination for typhoid fever. Treatment is with azithromycin or gatifloxacin (for young non diabetic patients). Most patients respond well to treatment, if the diagnosis is made and treatment begun soon enough. There is also paratyphoid fever that is not prevented by vaccination. Do not use ciprofloxacin for treatment as the bacteria is resistant to it.
